Lens Colours And Their Effectiveness
The optimal lens colour for sports sunglasses varies from what environment you’re in and what the lighting situation is when you’re playing. For example, lens colours/tints that work for playing baseball on a bright, sunny day will probably be too dark for running on a hazy, overcast day in the city. That being said, there are guidelines that eye care professionals do recommend in terms of lens colour, usually relative to the sport you’re playing or activity you’re taking part in. Don’t be afraid to change things up and test out other coloured lenses, as the perfect lens colour is highly subjective and a matter of personal preference. We carry these many colours for a reason!
Yellow and Orange
These colours increase contrast, visibility and depth perception on overcast, hazy, low-light conditions for outdoor and indoor sports. These colours filter blue light, which has been linked to eye damage and diseases such as age-related macular degeneration.
Great for: cycling, hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, indoor basketball, handball, racquetball and tennis.
Red, Rose and Amber
Rose and amber tinted lenses provide the best low-light image resolution and increase contrast on partly cloudy and sunny conditions. This enables you to see objects and shapes clearly, because it blocks out the color spectrum’s blue end.
Great for: cycling, fishing (amber lenses for sandy lake or stream beds), hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and water sports.
Dark Amber, Brown and Copper
These lenses block high amounts of blue light to increase contrast and detail. They’re particularly useful to improve contrast on grass and on blue skies.
Great for: baseball, cycling, fishing (especially in waters with grassy bottoms), golf, hunting, skiing and water sports.
Gray smoked lenses are meant for daytime wear. They reduces overall brightness while preserving 100% of normal color recognition.
Great for: all outdoor sports in bright light conditions, especially with glare.
Green coloured lenses can mildly increase visual contrast while preserving proper colour balances.
Great for: baseball and golf.
Enhances colour perception on foggy and/or snowy days.
Great for: winter sports, golfing and fishing/water sports.
Most sunglasses retailers carry lens samples that you can look through to help you decide what colour lens best suits you. If you’re playing multiple sports, then it’s a good idea to own more than one pair of glasses, each with a different coloured lens for optimal performance.
